A free demo has been on Steam since 2024, and the current version was rebuilt and re-released in November 2025. It is the best way to decide whether Beyond These Stars is for you before the October 16, 2026 release — as long as you know what it does and does not show.
What the Demo Includes
The demo runs the opening of the story. Your people, the Peeps, find themselves on the back of Kewa — a sentient space whale — after Kewa unexpectedly leaps away from their home planet. From there you get the core settlement loop: place roads and buildings on hex tiles, gather wood and stone, keep water and food coming, and start managing the first production lines.
The developer describes the current demo as covering the start of the story up to the point of travelling toward the next solar system, and the November 2025 rebuild folded in system changes that arrived after the first demo: reworked building placement, updated greenery and pollution behaviour, and revised in-game rewards. If you played the original 2024 Next Fest demo, this is not the same build.
What you can learn from it maps directly to the beginner guide: how the resource bar reads, how the Goals panel nudges you, how polluted tiles slow your Peeps, and how quickly a colony's problems compound when housing or food falls behind.
Where the Demo Ends
The journey toward the next solar system is the documented boundary. It does not, by itself, prove that the entire demo lacks ships, System View, ports or any space interaction. A feature-by-feature exclusion list needs direct testing of the current demo. The full galaxy and later progression extend beyond this story-opening preview; the planets and outposts guide covers the announced wider systems.
The demo also predates the peep behaviour systems confirmed for 1.0 — strikes, sickness and mourning, and celebrations. Settlement life in the demo is therefore calmer than the full game will be. The studio has published dev blogs detailing each of these systems, and they are part of the October release rather than post-launch updates.
| Aspect | Demo | Full 1.0 release |

| Price | Free | Not announced at the time of writing |
What to Test While It Is Free
Treat the demo as a systems exam rather than a content tour. The list below is what actually determines whether launch week goes well for you.
- Performance on your machine. The demo is an earlier snapshot, so treat its performance as indicative rather than predictive of the 1.0 build — but a demo that runs badly on your PC is worth knowing before launch day.
- Camera and controls. Confirm the camera behaviour and hotkeys suit you; see the controls page for the full list of inputs the demo documents.
- The production rhythm. Learn how materials flow and where waste builds up before the production chains of the full game ramp up.
- Kewa's signals. Watch how the whale's health and mood respond to your city — pollution and temperature matter, and the Kewa care guide explains what the game is telling you.
Pro tip: Spend your demo time in the second half deliberately making mistakes — overbuild one district, let waste pile up, watch what breaks first. The failure patterns you see in the demo are the same ones that cause strikes in the full release, and recognising them early is worth more than a tidy first city.
For the separate custom-game options confirmed for the full release, see the Sandbox settings guide.
